The Shanghai Ocean University and Professor Chen Zaizhong had invited Heiko for the second time to give seminars to his students about ornamental fish (left the statue of the founder). At this new campus of the Shanghai Ocean University where more than 12,000 students study many are dedicated to the research and study ornamental fishes only. Heiko also visited their labs and the set up of their fishes as well.

The new campus of the Shanghai Ocean University is a state of the art constructions and the entire University is dedicated to the study of fishes and hydrobiology, probably one of the largest in the world today to the study of aquatic environments. And a large part of the University is exclusively for ornamental fishes, which are housed in 4 of its buildings. Heiko Bleher was invited by the head of ornamental fish study, Professor Chen Zaizhong for the second time to give seminars to his students and also to visit their laboratories.
From the top: three fish-students of Prof. Chen were waiting for me at the Shanghai airport since 4 am as my plane from Milan arrived at 5 am, from left to right: Yan Gen Jur, Pan Hingyu and Sun Jie; the main building of the SHOU where Pfof. Chen has his main office; the building for the students and guest visitors (better then a 5-star-hotel); the plan of the campus; and the 4 buildings which are dedicated to the ornamental fish study and research.
Professor Chen with some of his students (top) and a view of some of their ultramodern laboratories and equipments.
Here some photos of their study and for example some of their results with discus fishes – the genus Symphysodon.
They have at the University among other things the most advanced technology in filter systems and a 24-hour water flow in and out of each one of the aquariums – individually.
And Professor Chen’s students have – each one on his own – a separate section and computer to study. It is an amazing University and I only wish there were more like this around the world to make it a better world. Congratulations Professor Chen and thank you all for having me and for all your help specially Pan Hongyu, (the tetra man), Hu Caixia (the goldfish specialist), Yuan Gen Jur (the seahorse breeder), Zhang Cheng Yi (the discus specialist) and Sun Jiie.
